Eyebrows Are The Gates….

“Eyes are the windows to the soul…and eyebrows are the gates” or so the saying goes…I think brows can make a huge difference with your look, both taking years off (by giving you that “instant facelift”) and by framing your eyes so that your peepers pack a bit more of a punch. When I got in to the industry, I learned how to shape my brows and keep them looking good by attending classes with Kelley Baker’s team. Kelley is one of the leading brow artists in the industry. Her latest claim to fame is grooming Kylie Jenner’s brows for the cover of Forbes! Kelley has several very strong suggestions (I never say “rules”) when it comes to brows:

  • embrace your natural shape: don’t try to go too crazy with a different brow shape than what your creator gave you. I pretty much agree with this, except I myself have “raised” my brows….I like a high arch and a flat tail, so that’s how I have groomed mine, but still generally along the lines of what I have.

  • start with a pencil for easy application, and then add powder if you have a bit more time and need it: meaning that if you have a fair amount of brow hair, you may just need to fill in with a pencil to get a pulled-together professional look. But if you are like me, and have lost your “tails” to age, or have some sparse areas, filling in with powder is going to be faster, easier, and give you the most natural look.

  • keeping the shape: head to a professional to get the shape of your brows down, and then keep up with the shape in the way that suits you best. There are several options. You can go back to that professional monthly to have that person either wax, pluck, or thread, or you can use a little brow razor like I do and keep up with the shape on a weekly basis. It’s so easy to do that, and I find the least “violent” for lack of a better word, way to keep your brows in shape. I offer the brow razors on my website here. You can book an in studio appointment or a virtual video appointment with me here, and have a brow session. The powder I like to use is here. And the pencils I use are here. I offer the Kelley Baker brand of products (eyebrow brush, highlighter brush, highlighter pencil, powders, clear gel, pencils).

One of the latest trends in the industry that I get asked about a lot is micro-blading. This involves a semi-permanent (although that term is debatable) tattoo of the eyebrow area to fill in brows. It can be expensive and the certification to become a micro-blader is only one day in many states, so you definitely want to check out your technician’s work before placing your brows in the hands of someone. I was in a coffee shop here in SF last year and had a woman approached me and asked me if my brows were micro-bladed because they looked so good. Turned out she was a blade technician. I told her, “Nope! Just me, myself, and I with a little help from my friends (tools that is)”.
