Tools of the Trade

It used to be so difficult to find information on what celebrities were using and wearing to big events like the Oscars. But now with Instagram, it’s very easy if you are interested. I love to follow various “makeup artists to the stars” and watch them work their trade.

I love @missjobaker, whose current muse is Lucy Boynton who played the wife in Bohemian Rhapsody. I didn’t think she had a big part in that, but she is HOT HOT HOT right now. And her makeup artist always starts with a sketch and is constantly inspired color-wise by common objects around us.

Of course, many of the makeup artists are mini-industries in themselves and use only the product lines that they are repping and/or are spokespeople for. Or perhaps their client is a celebrity spokesperson for a line or the artist may even be popular enough to have her own line. The above is an image from @patidubroff’s instagram feed. She’s an artist that is very well known and does a lot of Vogue covers.

Hair artists are, of course, totally in demand. I loved this shot from @jennychohair’s feed. That’s Lucy Boynton in the chair. Many hair artists collaborate with the same makeup artists over and over and refer one another to jobs. It can be tough to break in.

But it’s not all glamorous. As one artist put it: ”justintymeart The brushes are dirty, the kit is a mess. That’s a wrap for awards season and goodbye to the stress…” As they say, one person’s stress is another person’s dream! ;)
