2018 ReSOULTIONS! *New Makeup and Brushes*

Hey everyone…it’s the start of 2018 and the time to be making out your year’s #makeupgoals, right? What do you think is the most important suggestion I have for your makeup goals in 2018? I don’t think you are going to be able to guess it. It’s actually two fold: (1) embrace throwing away old makeup and (2) cleaning your makeup brushes.

We have to embrace throwing away old makeup! There are different longevity periods for different types of makeup but all makeup expires. With all the different dates, I find it gets confusing for my clients. So I try to make it simple. ONE YEAR. If your makeup is older than one year, you need to throw it away. Exceptions: high end mineral makeup will last longer (if you are keeping your brushes clean), pencils that are regularly sharpened will last longer, and mascara or wand-based makeup that is applied to eyes generally expires in 6 months. Now I know you are saying “WHAH? There is so much makeup left in my palettes!” But you see the industry gives us way too much makeup than we can use in a year. It’s just the way it is. Sort of like the hot dogs and bun issue, where they give you too many buns for the average hot dog pack!

We also have to keep our brushes clean. This will keep your makeup in good shape and your application will render much more professional results. How do you clean them? Well, there are several options, but the best option is the one you will actually do. For the vast majority of my clients, that means using a makeup brush spray like this one that I offer. It is inexpensive and gets the job done. You simple spray it on a paper towel and on the bristles of your brush and wipe the brush off on the towel until there is no more makeup showing. You should do this once a week. If you do, and you purchase good quality brushes*, they should last for several years.

*the brushes and sponge applicators that come with some makeup brands are decorative and should be thrown out!
